The Deutsch Langhaar, English translation “German Longhair”, is a breed defined by rules and regulations established in Germany and adhered to since 1879. Although the English translation for Deutsch Langhaar is German Longhair, they are two distinctly separate breeds and the term is not interchangeable. German Longhairs, also known as German Longhair Pointers, German Longhaired Pointers and GLPs, are bred without restriction and outside of the breeding rules and regulations of the DLV. Although the breeding rules and regulations are strict, their longevity and success is proven in the quality of dogs that have resulted from the JGHV testing system and DLV guidelines. It appears that the Deutsch Langhaar has finally gained footing among the crowded versatile hunting dog ranks and the breed numbers in the U.S. are climbing rapidly. For years previously, there has been a small following of Deutsch Langhaar enthusiasts in the United States, yet there was no active breed club established that was committed to the principles of the JGHV and DLV. The Deutsch-Langhaar Breed Association defines “pure-breeding” as the preservation of the breed’s appearance conforming to type and of its demonstrated hunting abilities. A Deutsch-Langhaar dog is certified to be a pure-bred if it is registered in the Deutsch- Langhaar Breed Register (ZDL), is issued a pedigree and was tattooed as a puppy and has been bred in accordance with the Breeding Regulations of the Deutsch Langhaar Verband (DLV). It is because of this solid breeding program, that quality versatile hunting Deutsch Langhaars exist today. The Deutsch Langhaar is an exceptional versatile hunting dog, excelling in water work and in tracking. Emphasized is a versatile hunting dog for the on foot hunter. The DL is a versatile working hunting dog, not a sporting dog. The Deutsch Langhaar was developed in Germany and not only has flourished there for over 100 years, it is the ideal versatile hunting dog suited for North America hunting as well. The reason for this is exemplified by the true versatility of the breed. They can hunt in all types of terrain, excel in the water and on land with all types of game, both feather and fur. Deutsch Langhaar Gruppe Nordamerika membership is comprised of upland bird hunters, waterfowl hunters, boar hunters and a falconer. Although hunting conditions are vastly different here from in Europe, the breed standard established by the DLV for the Deutsch Langhaar are in flux with individual breeding goals and preferences, which can result in an emergence of type, yet still remain true to the standard. The result is a talented gundog ideally suited for hunting in North America without compromising and losing characteristics that makes the Deutsch Langhaar unique and the excellent versatile hunting companion it is today. Our sister club the VDD-GNA is a classic example of how the true versatility of the German dogs and integrity of the German system has enjoyed remarkable success in North America for over 30 years. |
